Multisig

A lock needing several keys — spend only when, say, two of three agree.

In plain words

Multisig locks coins behind several keys — say, any two of three. Scatter the keys across places or people and no single theft, fire, or blunder can move the money. Lose one key? Two still work. The price is complexity: more backups, more devices, more ways to confuse yourself. It earns its keep for serious savings, businesses, and inheritance.

Why it matters

  • It kills the single point of failure — the one thing a plain wallet cannot do.
  • A company can hold one key to help you, without owning your money.
  • Complexity is its own risk. Rehearse the recovery first.

Not to be confused with

  • A passphrase — that still guards one key; multisig requires several independent ones.
