ASIC miners
The industrial machine that mines Bitcoin: specialized chips, huge fans, serious power draw.
In plain words
An ASIC miner is the whole mining machine: boards of mining chips, a big power supply, and fans that never stop. A modern one draws as much power as a few space heaters running around the clock, and roars like a vacuum cleaner. This is factory equipment, not living-room gear. Home mining still happens — usually where electricity is cheap, or where the heat is useful.
Why it matters
- The physical layer of Bitcoin's security — someone, somewhere, runs these.
- Electricity price decides everything; the hardware is secondary.
- New chips retire old machines within a few years — the treadmill is brutal.
Numbers that matter
- 3–4 kW — typical draw of a modern unit.
- ~75+ dB — stock fan noise, roughly a vacuum cleaner.
Not to be confused with
- Node hardware — checking Bitcoin takes a quiet mini-PC, not one of these.
