Basics

Satoshi (the unit)

The smallest piece of a bitcoin — one hundred-millionth, named after its creator.

In plain words

One bitcoin splits into 100 million satoshis — sats. A sat is the smallest amount Bitcoin can move. Prices are honest in sats: a coffee is thousands of sats, not 0.0000-something of a coin. No one needs to buy a whole bitcoin. Everyone is really trading sats.

Why it matters

  • "Too expensive" is a confusion — you buy fractions, not trophies.
  • Fees and Lightning payments are priced in sats; you will see them everywhere.
  • Easier arithmetic than eight decimal places.

Numbers that matter

  • 100,000,000 — sats in one bitcoin.
  • 2.1 quadrillion — sats that will ever exist.

Not to be confused with

  • Satoshi Nakamoto — the creator the unit is named after.
